Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have been privileged to serve students with special needs in an urban school district for the last 20 years. My students work hard to learn but in addition to their daily learning challenges, they face disproportionate rates of poverty and discrimination due to their minority ethnicities. School should be a safe place and it was for my students until school closures and distance learning left them isolated. Why did this happen?
Frankly, there were not enough computers to go around and the youngest and most venerable children were left without access to technology.
Should you honor us with this grant, we will load learning software on these computers and distribute them to my students so they can have their best chance to achieve the American Dream. Our dream does not stop with the pandemic, nor does it wait until middle school or high school to reach high achievements. We cannot settle for less than a future where every child can accomplish greatly despite age or obstacles.
My Project
As our society shelters in place to protect those whose health is most at risk, some of our youngest and most venerable children have been left at life-long risk during this pandemic. Without access to technology for distance learning, few books in their homes, and social distancing precluding most contacts, my students' educations are suffering. Reading, and rigor begins way before 3rd grade. Students of color and of low socioeconomic backgrounds who have learning challenges deserve a chance to participate in online learning during the pandemic closures!
I am seeking Chromebooks so my students served under special education can access online learning platforms and continue to close their learning gaps.
Unfortunately, in our district, technology quantities were not sufficient even for all the 3rd graders to have access and no computers were available for primary grade students. My young students want to learn yet remain in limbo with few options.
