Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend an urban high school. It is the most diverse high school in the state. My 9th and 10th grade reading students are not reading on grade level. They are in a year long reading class in order to increase their reading level. Most of my students come from literacy poor homes as well.
My students do not have easy access to quality literature.
They need access to high interest independent reading books. Most of my students come from homes with no books. They also avoid using the library because of the fear of losing books and having to pay to replace them or pay overdue fines. In my classroom, it is my goal to have enough books for all of my students.
My Project
The students in my 9th grade reading classes are three to four years behind in their reading skills. These are students who generally boast that they, "hate to read!" However, when anyone is interested enough in a topic, she will read! The Hate U Give is a novel that touches on the relevant topics that they're seeing in the news every day. When a 'nonreader' asks to read a book, you deliver!
Reading The Hate U Give will challenge them in their thinking, will show them that reading can be enjoyable, and will spark conversations and debate.
My job is to show them that reading has value and can be relevant to their lives. Through the reading of this powerful novel, my students can begin to view themselves as readers.
