My Students

My special needs students face many challenges daily, one being the ability to process sensory information and the ability to regulate their sensory needs. I am requesting materials that help my students calm down, concentrate and focus on their lessons instead of disrupting everyone's education.

I have a self-contained special education classroom of 12 students that are eager to learn in their own way.

Many of my students are autistic and have difficulty focusing and learning using traditional teaching methods. The school is a high poverty school with over 75% of the students receiving free and reduced price lunches. The school is a 4th through 6th grade school and has limited funds to provide sensory materials and hands-on activities for these students.

My Project

Everyone is wired a little different. My students are no exception and they each have different sensory needs. I am trying to provide the sensory food each student needs. A variety of things like ball seats, weighted blankets, fidgets, deep pressure, or other materials need to be on the menu to help them calm down before they can focus on their lessons. When a student's sensory diet is fulfilled they are better able to learn and manage their behaviors. Just as when you eat, you don't want to eat the same thing over and over; these students need a variety in their diets also. Things will become old and lose their effectiveness, so I always need new tricks in my bag. When these students learn the different tools and activities that they can use to calm down, they can use their brains in the right way so they are ready to learn. The cost of these much needed helps add up. The school budget has been cut and I need help obtaining them.

If students are hungry and don't have their sensory needs met they aren't comfortable or able to focus on learning.

When students have the tools to allow them to learn more effectively then everyone benefits. This project will provide materials that will feed my students sensory needs. Contributing to this project will be helping to ensure that these students receive the sensory support they need to be successful students!
