Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

During the past 5 years, I have been working to integrate Vernier computer probes to modernize our Chemistry lab room for required AP experiments. Students are now making measurements with digital computer thermometer and digital pH probes. Now we need to expand to include digital colorimeters.

Our student population is by majority Hispanic (70%), followed by Asian, White, Black, Pacific Islander, and various other groups.

Almost all my students are classified as belonging to our state’s lowest economic category which qualifies them for financial assistance such as reduced price lunch and free tutoring programs. For nearly 50% of my students, the primary language that their families speak at home is not English. Many of our students were classified as ESL students (English as a Second Language) when they began high school, but they have now been reclassified as English Proficient. Since we are not a private school, our science lab programs truly survive from donations or grants, and the state and local district education funds that reach the classroom are insufficient to keep up with even the minimal technological standards.

My Project

My students need 3 colorimeters for AP Chemistry spectroscopy experiments. Students love experimenting with colorimetry, and they gain valuable experience with computer technology in a Chemistry lab environment. The colorimeter probe sends different wavelengths (colors) of the light spectrum into a liquid solution and then measures the intensity of the light beam that exits the solution. In this way, students can determine the concentrations of solutions without ever touching or adding anything to the liquid. Several required AP analysis lab experiments like "Spectrophotoscopy: Investigation of Beer's Law" and "Determination of an Equilibrium Constant" will use the Vernier colorimeter. In traditional chemistry, a spectrophotometer instrument, which costs a minimum of $1000 each, is required for these experiments. But with the Vernier equipment, the same experiments can be performed for just over $200 and students get to work with computer-linked science technology.

My students absolutely love working with computers during their Chemistry labs.

I believe it inspires them to strongly consider careers in medicine, science, and engineering. But due to school district funding cuts, it has taken me several years just to gain the computer equipment. We are getting closer to our goal, but once we receive 3 more colorimeter units, we will be able to accommodate 12-16 students simultaneously. Can you please help us reach our goal?
