Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In first, second, and third grades it is so important to develop a love for reading in kids, and expose them to exciting stories above their reading ability level so that they will carry that interest in literacy on with them all through their lives! The primary grades are such formative years. This year, I want the 1st-3rd grade students at my school to be able to connect to and appreciate literature in many different forms! Text-based, dramatic performance-based...anything to get them excited and thinking critically about stories is my goal. I also want them to be able to note the similarities and differences between each literary interpretation, and appreciate both. Some of these students will have never attended a play before. Others don't have age-appropriate books at home. Still others don't have an adult that can take the time to read them chapter books for fun and enrichment-- the only exposure they get to literature is at school. So, in this Dramatic Literature Connections project, I would love if students could read the first three wildly popular Junie B. Jones chapter books in class, obtained from the Chicago Public Library. We will then attend a dramatic performance of Junie B. Jones presented by Theatreworks USA on March 7. Afterward, we will compare the two interpretations of the stories. Thanks for reading!
