Playing With Letters S-P-E-L-L-S Learning!

My Project

Becoming a proficient speller requires lots of practice, especially when the words you are spelling are not in your first language! My learners come from a variety of backgrounds, and more than three-quarters of them are from low-income homes and more than half speak another language. Many of their families struggle to support them with reading and writing at home. The extra effort required of my students means that our spelling practice at school needs to be extra efficient and our room needs to be equipped with all of the basic supplies that learning requires! Research shows that learning through play allows students to learn with both greater depth and speed.

My students need powerful practice spelling through "play" using exciting materials that will spark their learning as they entice them to work in engaging ways.

They will use letter beads, letter stamps, scented pens, markers, invisible ink, colorful paper, scrabble tiles, play-doh, silicone popping keyboards and more each day to provide concrete, hands-on practice building the words that will become the building blocks of their education. They will use large paper to spell in groups, adding to the novelty and joy of the learning experience. These materials work well, both for children who are just beginning to spell and for kids who are ready for harder words, so every child I have the privilege to teach will benefit. All children love fun, and by working with their hands to build and write words in engaging ways, my learners at every level will find joy in learning and spelling will become a cinch!
