Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students’ come from a small, rural, farming community in Oregon. They are a close knit group of kids that love to learn and try new things. They are kind, fun, smart, inquisitive, and creative!
My students come from diverse backgrounds, with many speaking Spanish as their first language.
Over 90% of our student body gets free or reduced lunch. While many students struggle with stressful home lives, the overarching feeling at our school is that of kindness to one another.
My Project
After introducing a new song that uses the ukulele, my students are hooked! The whole school has been learning to sing the song, "You'll Sing a Song and I'll Sing a Song" which I accompany with ukulele, and now they all want to learn to play it. We currently have two ukuleles, so we are hoping to get a few more so the class can learn to play in small groups. Learning to play the ukulele will help teach my students about chords, accompanying a song, and how to take the things they've learned in music class and apply them to making music at home.
