My students are a diverse group of kindergartners who attend a high-poverty urban elementary school. They love coming to school and love to learn! My school values high expectations for all children and believes in providing ways for all children to learn.
As an urban school in a school district with limited resources, there is not funding for such important parts of the kindergarten day as free choice time.
Our school has funding for the bare basics, but as we all know, in order for our children to thrive we must provide them with as enriching of an environment as possible.
I have requested a play refrigerator for our classroom dramatic play area. The play kitchen is a much loved area in our classroom, but unfortunately the current refrigerator is broken beyond repair. A new refrigerator will allow the children to make full use of the space again.
My students love learning math and literacy skills through spending time in the dramatic play area.
The children are able to practice their writing skills by writing recipes and shopping lists. They practice reading skills by reading kitchen and thematic vocabulary words. My students practice math skills while counting items as they cook! While setting the table, they understand the relationship between numbers and counting. Through speaking and listening, my children practice asking questions and responding in complete sentences. They also have opportunities to practice important social skills as well by taking turns. Providing dramatic play offers a more enriching kindergarten classroom experience that will better prepare my students for first grade and beyond.
