Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a special education pre-kindergarten teacher teaching in a blended classroom which serves children with and without special needs. 90% of the children in my classroom receive free or reduced lunch and range in age from 3-5 years old. Having two sessions a day, I work with 40 children each school day.

Working with children who have special needs, I have noticed that many of them need to strengthen their gross motor skills. While some children lack in strong balance and coordination, others are working to develop their running, jumping, and throwing skills. I have set aside a time to develop these skills, but am lacking in materials to support the develop of such important body strength. My gross motor room unfortunately does not have enough materials to develop these skills. I currently have a basketball hoop with no balls, limited tricycles, and one crawling tube to use with twenty children.

In order to have enough materials to setup a variety of activities that will strengthen the gross motor skills of my students I am requesting Step-a-Logs and a Gross Motor Skills Kit. The Step-A-Logs will allow for physical activity as well as improving the sense of balance for my students. I can organize logs in a straight line then move on to curves and more challenging log placements to provide support as the needs of my students change. The Gross Motor Kit will allow me create throwing and racing games with balls, bean bags, and hoops. I can also create obstacle courses with the jump ropes and ribbons in conjunction with our existing hoop and crawling tube. These games will build upon their lacking gross motor skills.

Your help will ensure that my students have quality materials to help strengthen their gross motor skills. You will make it possible for them to develop balance and coordination, and strength in running, jumping, and throwing through these much needed materials.
