My Students

My name is Matthew Couch and I am the Theatre Arts Teacher and Gaming Club sponsor at JMS in Grand Prairie, Tx! Three years ago, I was approached by my principal to help start an afterschool program for the students who weren't into sports, but maybe like to walk on the "nerdy" side of life. Needless to say, I was in!

I was ecstatic beyond all belief to create an environment for students who felt like they "didn't belong".

Thus, we created the JMS Gaming Club. We began playing old used board games and roleplaying games, such as D&D. Roleplaying games instill reading and comprehension skills, mathematics, and social skills. Kids who were too afraid to speak up in the class were all of sudden creating characters and voices as they roleplayed through different situations in the game.

We are looking to expand our gaming club resources to help bring more students into our afterschool program. We recently had a successful campaign and we are looking for more!

My Project

Students will use these items to enhance our before and after-school Gaming Club.

The five D&D Player's Handbooks will ensure that kids aren't sharing the single book we have now, allowing students to stay engaged and use their rulebooks as reference tools in a timely manner.

The board games are generally used in our morning sessions which are a great way to awaken the student's minds for their school day. Board games promote problem-solving skills which help students problem solve in their classes.

Having these items will bolster our range of games allowing us to recruit more students into the club and provide a better environment for students who do not have an extra-curricular activity in which to participate.
