Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a unique community where you find individuals who have different sensory, communication, and educational abilities and needs. Our classroom may look different than your typical classroom because everything is adapted to best help my student have access to the education they deserve. This not only includes curriculum but also furniture, routines, and even the way we communicate in the classroom!
My class consists of six amazing students with big personalities who happen to fall on the autism spectrum.
Of these six incredible individuals, one is non-verbal, three are partially verbal, and two are able to verbally speak with some speech delays. We work every day not only on academic skills but on self-help, social, and communication skills as well.
My Project
Social skills are something that many individuals with autism struggle with. Many of my students struggle to connect to others including their families and classroom peers. They have a difficult time working or playing with others both at home and in school.
Simple board games like LET S GO FISHIN, SMART SNACKS COUNTING COOKIES, LUCKY DUCKS and other grames will help my students connect to their peers in a way that can be generalized into their home with their parents and siblings!
Once they learn to play appropriately in school they can utilize those skills in other settings.They also learn basic attending skills that generalize into other areas of their education such as sitting appropriately, following directions, and taking turns!
