Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I owe much of my mathematical sense to my obsession with playing cards as a child. Seriously, most card games are FULL of pattern making, set recognition, mental math, categorization, and strategic problem solving. In particular, Cribbage, a game in which my great grandmother was the reigning champion in Lyndonville, VT in 1955, is a math teacher's paradise. I want my students to learn how to play Cribbage in order to practice their mental math, observe and continue patterns, solve basic functions, witness probability concepts, and relate sets and combinations. I need your help to bring Cribbage to my students. What we need is a class set of cribbage materials: cribbage boards and playing cards. I am prepared to teach the students the game and draw the clear math connections, but I need the supplies to do so. Please help my students refine their math skills and see the recreational benefits of good math sense. Thank you!
