Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is one where all of our students are provided with a classroom and school environment that encourages academic and moral excellence, and conveys the worth and dignity of each child, the excitement and joy of learning, the beauty and wonder of life. A life that moves beyond self is the order that is essential to learning and living.
Our school is representative of our linguistically diverse community.
I teach over five hundred students each week. Over ninety percent of them are Hispanic, eighty-four percent are considered low-income and about fourteen percent are English Language learners. Our school is also unique. We have dual-language classrooms in each grade. Students are learning in two languages, English and Spanish simultaneously.
My Project
Chess is played in nearly every country worldwide. There are so many varieties. After the first two moves, students will have over 70,000 different possible moves. Chess is a game that can be played by many.
Chess skills are best mastered by playing chess as often as you can.
Practice makes perfect. This school year I have been challenged to create a course in which students will use board games to help them with their problem-solving, critical and higher-order thinking skills.
In order to begin this work, we will be learning how to play chess. For that reason, we need chess replacement pieces and books in order to make this happen.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
