Our students, diagnosed with autism and attending a middle school classroom in a public school for students with disabilities in Brooklyn NYC, greatly and benefit from engaging in sports and being outdoors.
Their eagerness to bring their learning outside is undeniable. It's time to give students a chance to stretch their legs; exercise their bodies and their minds.
My Project
With the outdoor sports equipment, my students will have the opportunity to engage in previously missed experiences interacting with their peers due to social distancing and remote learning. Students are naturally distanced in many outdoor/team sports and required to communicate with their peers.
Getting my students outside and moving while playing a team sport is the ideal way to combine all the skills we have been working on in isolation.
Sequencing skills and the ability to follow steps presented in reading and writing is practiced in kickball, baseball, and racket sports. Fine motor and gross motor abilities are utilized in all sports, skills introduced in occupational therapy and adapted physical education. The best thing about team sports is that the students motivate one another and as educators, we can tie in academic skills (i.e. solve a math problem before a pitch for your team).
Part of returning to normal is to move away from the screens that we have been depending on for the last year. For our middle schoolers with autism, one of the best ways to achieve this is to engage them in sports.
