Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year my students are beginning a new journey. All first grade students at my school located in a suburb of a large city will be learning to read, write and communicate in two languages, English and Spanish. My classes have 20 boys and 24 girls. Many speak Spanish and many speak English but I also have students who speak Chinese, Vietnamese, Somali and Tongan. All of these students have one thing in common, they need language development. They work hard each day to try out new sounds and to explain their thinking in a new language and parents work hard to help their children master skills they are learning themselves.
My Project
Students spend 6 hours a day at school. First grade students need more time to wiggle, laugh, create and move.
Learning is hard work for a 6-year old When 6-year olds work with Playdough the tension of the day fades from their faces and smiles take its place.
They are totally engaged in their play. Wether it be creating a monster or making cookies for their imaginary bake sale they are engaged and interacting with their classmates, able to use their creativity, engineering skills and language skills to act out their project.
Six-year olds need as many hands on experiences as they can get in the traditional classroom. Playdough will allow them the kinesthetic experiences they need to feel successful!
