Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students in my classroom are asked to work hard each day from the time they arrive until it is time to go home. My students need activities that are independent and educational that are also fun and engaging. My goal is to have 19 out of 20 students at grade level by the end of the school year.
My students come from a low income area and learn in a K-6 school with over 700 students.
They represent many different cultures with over 75% speaking two or more languages at home. As diverse as our school is our students share one very important obstacle, life experiences. Most of my students come to my classroom never having played a board game or created with playdough. They come to school wanting to learn and do their best every day but it is difficult to provide experiences that keep their attention for very long. My students thrive in an environment that provides hands on activities and new experiences.
My Project
Imagine a 90 minute reading block that offers every students 15 minutes to practice their literacy skills using playdough and alphabet cookie cutters. Even my most active boys would have the opportunity to use their hands, rolling pins, ocean animal cookie cutters and backgrounds to create stories. Students will be able to work cooperatively to share not only the materials, but ideas as well. They will learn to communicate and work together. Students will be learning through play something my children do not have enough time to do
In order to meet our lofty goal of 19 out of 20 students at benchmark by grade 3 we need to find more creative ways to engage our students.
In this day and age of video games where things move at a fast pace traditional teaching methods are not as effective. We need our students to look forward to learning by tapping into their creativity.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
