This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Sometimes a classroom's success can come down to having basic supplies like playdough and paper. In early childhood classrooms we are finding that children are struggling more and more with fine motor skills and that they need such things as playdough to strengthen their hand muscles and writing and drawing opportunities more than ever. These skills are essential for establishing the pre-academic skills that the children will need in future years.
For the upcoming school year my district is facing a 200 million budget shortfall, the budget line for supplies at my school has been eliminated.
This was done to ensure we can maintain our current staff. To make-up for the loss of supplies we will be asking families to donate school supplies. This will be a hardship for many of our families as our school community consists of 94% of our families living below the poverty line.
These materials will help the children learn how to hold a crayon with a pincer grasp which will help them transition to pencils later on. The playdough will help to build the muscles in their hands. The paper will let us continue to draw pictures and start to learn how to write. The highlighters provide tracing opportunities in both our writing and math journals. The cardstock will allows us to continue making craft projects. Thank you for considering this project and supporting public education!
