My Students

Oh... I get it now!!! These are the words that I love to hear in my classroom!

My Math classroom is a place of deep thinking and perseverance.

Students spend the year extending the foundation of knowledge and skills they will need as they move forward in Jr. High.

The students are 6th graders in a suburban Arizona elementary school. They begin the year focusing on solving mathematical operations but end the year as deep mathematical thinkers. They are excited when they are able to discuss rigorous problems and use math tools or vertical non-permanent work surfaces to justify their reasoning. They take pride in their efforts and are willing to challenge their minds for the sake of learning.

My Project

My sixth-grade students struggle with number sense, extending algebraic reasoning and geometric problem-solving. Having taught in primary education I know first hand how beneficial hands-on materials can be for making sense of math. I want to set up a "play with math" station in my classroom. At this station, students will be able to engage with the math manipulatives in a semi-structured way so that they may develop essential skills, creatively work with visual patterns, and build confidence in their mathematical thinking.

In my classroom, we work hard to build conceptual knowledge in math.

The resources that I am provided with from my district are workbooks and digital manipulatives. My students are tech savvy and book-smart, but they are still unable to make sense of the math they do in their workbook to real situations. This addition of hands-on materials would give my students much needed tools to practice and build confidence in their mathematical thinking while building a love of math at the same time.
