This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a co-taught special education Pre-K classroom that consists of 42 3 year old students. Half of the students in the class have special needs while all of them come from very low income families. They all have diverse backgrounds including family structure and the different languages spoken. The one thing they all have in common is that when they enter my classroom, I am their very first teacher and this school year will be there first ever school experience.
My students are loving, energetic, insightful, inquisitive and hard workers; they are our future inventors, mathematicians, scientists, gardeners, and doctors.
My Project
"Children learn as they play. More importantly, in play children learn how to learn' -O. Fred Donaldson
As their teacher, it is my duty to create a learning environment that affords them to want to play, want to learn, and want to grow.
As I encourage my students to use their imaginations during play, I am already envisioning how and where my students can best utilize these materials.
The item I am most excited for is the versatile Marketplace. It will have multiple uses and will be incorporated for every theme within the dramatic play center. The students will be able to "sell" their fresh fruits and veggies at their farmers marker one week and then "check" patients in at the doctor's office the next.
Our kitchen will be complete with our very own cleaning tools. Every year I always have students who borrow the classroom broom and dust pan ready to clean their house. With these tools, they can be more independent.
The children absolutely love to build in the block center. They create buildings, castles, fire stations but do not have the vehicles or people to transport around their town.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
