My Students

"Mens sana in corpore sano" is a Latin expression that means humans should strive for both a healthy body and mind. This is why I am requesting gym equipment for my students. I hope that my students will not only excel in academic standards, but also learn to value and maintain their health.

My lively 4th grade students come from homes where English is not spoken.

Some of their native languages include Chinese, Spanish and Arabic. They are a resilient and inquisitive bunch who are eager to make their families proud through success in school. Regardless of their efforts, most of my students are 1 to 3 years below grade level. Meeting 4th grade standards by the end of the year may seem a daunting task, so we focus on the progress students make toward these goals. Our classroom is nestled in a Title 1 school where most of the students qualify for free lunch and many receive ESL services. It is a calm, well-organized setting that sets high expectations for both students and teachers. Despite the linguistic challenges, I am amazed to see how the children not only use basic English to communicate with each other, but also socialize through a non-verbal language of movement and play. Physical activity allows for a more inclusive classroom where all students feel success.

My Project

There is a lot of research on the role of physical activity in increasing cognitive functioning and reducing stress for both children and adults. In recent years, correlations have been made between the uptick in cases of A.D.D. and decreases in the amount of classroom time consecrated to physical activity. Fortunately, in our school, teachers can sign up for time slots to bring their classes outside for outdoor gym. This is a wonderful idea! After exercising or participating in group activities, students return to their classroom with happy bodies and minds ready to learn. Classroom teachers organize these activities and must share one bag of sporting goods with the other 9 classes on the grade. The 4th grade has a paltry selection of a few balls and some broken jump ropes left from last year. We do not have enough resources to help keep our students physically healthy. I'd like to make 4 bags of equipment and assign 2 bags per 5 classes so they won't fall into disrepair.

Your donation will change the lives of 320 students.

With this equipment, students will learn how to follow rules to participate in games, work together as a team and resolve conflict; they will practice their English all the while doing so. Moreover, in the UN's Declaration of the Rights of the Child, article 7 states, "The child shall have full opportunity for play and recreation, which should be directed to the same purposes as education..." You can help make these words come to fruition.
