My Students

My students attend Special Education preschool. They have a variety of needs including speech/language, occupational and physical therapy, Autism, etc. Being back in the classroom has given them much-needed access to hands-on learning and play alongside their peers. Online-learning has been difficult for those with short attention spans whose learning involves how to function in a classroom, how to play appropriately with toys and peers, and how to develop language in order to get needs and wants met.

Since this is my students' first experience with school, most come excited to play, sing, create and make new friends.

Some also come with apprehension about leaving caregivers and trying new things. They light up with new toys, puzzles and play-based activities that engage them in learning pre-academic skills as they also learn to share, take turns, follow directions and express needs. I am excited to build my environment with a variety of experiences that will give my little ones more consistent opportunities to play (a child’s “work,”) engage with same-age peers, and practice the skills that will help establish a love for life-long learning and build their confidence in themselves, despite challenges they may be facing.

My Project

Placing pieces of a puzzle, following a magnet maze to sort, count or match letters, building with magnetic tiles, labeling emotions, painting, tossing and catching a ball, playing house with family dolls and balancing on a scooter all help to develop fine or gross motor movements, while also teaching precursory skills for reading (such as letter recognition, listening for sounds, story re-tell), math (such as colors, matching, counting and spatial awareness), writing (such as letter formation) and social/emotional awareness and well-being (such as not giving up when things are new or challenging, recognizing and labeling emotions in others and practicing more grown up routines and responsibilities).

Giving children a natural play-based setting where they don't realize they are learning allows them the opportunity to relate to others as well as the world around them and progress in their ability to use their new skills in every-day situations.

By donating to this project you will help all of my students, each with his or her own unique weaknesses and strengths to participate in and learn from play - which is a child's way of exploring, learning about, interacting with and practicing roles so they can become a positive part of their world. My students are intelligent and constantly need new and engaging ways to play in order to learn and grow.
