My Project

I love the diversity of my students and how much they make me laugh!

In addition to supporting students with foundational skills for academic success, my classes are designed to foster non-cognitive skills for academic and career success.

These non-cognitive, or social-emotional skills, include getting along with others in group work, having a good attitude, and following the direction of the teacher. This particular set of skills under the social-emotional umbrella is referred to as prosocial behavior. Prosocial behavior includes kindness, compassion, collaboration, teamwork, and cooperation (Bergin, 2018).

Specific ways prosocial behavior might show up in the classroom include standing up for others and confronting wrongdoers, providing emotional support, helping others develop skills, complimenting and encouraging others, including others, physically helping others, making others smile and laugh, and making peace (Bergin, 2018).

Game-based learning experiences are an excellent way to facilitate the opportunity for prosocial skills development in the classroom. To create game-based learning experiences, one effective way is to integrate hands-on games into the curriculum as a method to provide the opportunity for students to practice the five prosocial behaviors.

For example, during the examination of the prosocial behavior concepts, a lesson designed with game-based learning might have students observe and evaluate the gameplay of their peers to identify how a specific prosocial behavior showed up during the game.
