This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a school counselor in a low-socioeconomic school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students demographics range from single parent homes to grandparents as caregivers.
Low socioeconomic students have limited access to resources. Many of them have social emotional barriers that have been passed down from prior generation. My students long for success academically and socially.
My Project
Having the sand tray materials to use for play therapy will allow the students to express what is troubling them when they do not have the verbal language to express their thoughts and feelings. The positive relationship that develops between the school counselor and the student during play therapy sessions can provide a corrective emotional experience necessary for healing.
Play therapy has also been used to promote cognitive development and provide insight about and resolution of inner conflicts or dysfunctional thinking in the child.
My school's demographic consists of low-socioeconomic families. The students have limited access to mental health care, which has been a barrier to their academic and social-emotional success. As a elementary school counselor I can provide the students with solution-focused therapy while continuously building a trust relationship with them, which will help them form goals for success.
