Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the best! They are bright, fun, energetic first graders who love to learn. Our school is located in a urban setting. We house the Sheltered English Immersion program for the city. All students who speak English as a second language come to our school. As a result I have the opportunity to work with wonderful families that understand and value the power of an education.
My students represent 11 different countries.
Although most of them are living below the poverty line they come to school every day with a smile on their face ready to learn. They are a special group of children and there is no other school I would rather work at!
My Project
What is the best way to practice vocabulary, oral language, social skills, and review content?...Play!! In our first grade class we learn through thematic units. These units allow us to tackle an essential question across subject areas, allowing for a more solid understanding of a topic. From August to mid-February our themes include: family, living and nonliving, food as fuel, animal growth, and animal features. One of the most coveted and practical ways to allow students to practice the content necessary to answer these essential questions is through play.
Playing allows students to apply content to a real world context in a meaningful way.
Students will use the doll house and family characters to explore our essential question: "What makes a family?" The food and cooking set will help the children answer "What's the difference between living and nonliving?" and "Where does our food come from?" While the animal puppets can be used to tell "How do animals change as they grow?" and "How are animals different?"
By playing together in small groups students practice social and cooperative skills. They also have the opportunity to retell what they learned and apply new vocabulary in a meaningful context. Plus it creates a buzz and excitement around our units!
