Teaching in a low-income community comes with its challenges, but my students work through the tough times to come out on top! My students are amazing! They come from such diverse backgrounds, but come together to be one learning community. They are helpful, loving and enthusiastic about learning. My students come from working-class families who put forth as much effort as they can when it comes to their childrens' education. However, this is not always enough for our classroom to have all we need for success.
Third grade is a growing year.
The students in my class have a wide range of abilities and it is my job to help bridge the gap between the cans and the can nots. We work together, as a community, to build each other up and not leave anyone behind. We are all in this together!
The students in my class are mostly African-American and Hispanic. Many come from a single parent household, and from living environments that are not always the safest. I want for my students to be excited to come to school, not only for a safe place to be; but also because of all the learning that is occurring daily.
Many times Social Studies and Science are the forgotten subjects. I want my students to be able to experience the most they can from these two areas of study.
MY students come alive when it is time for Social Studies or Science.
They love the hands-on nature of each, and are excited when we can bring their learning to real live situations. What better way then with games? Students love to play, share, and explore and these games will allow them to do just that. In addition to exposing them to Social Studies and Science scenarios, it will also reinforce Reading and Math skills. These activities are a win/win all the way around.
