My Students

As I start my 39th year teaching in the public school classroom, I am so thankful. My school, while built in the early 70s, is framed by two lovely state parks. On the way to work each day, I see sunrises over the mountain and a variety of wildlife.

My students are just as sweet and talented as the surroundings are beautiful and it is my desire to help develop and perfect that talent.

Like most middle school students, our students yearn to be a part of a group, and being a part of a musical ensemble fulfills that need of belonging and acceptance.

My Project

My music students are very talented and eager to share that talent. Often, that eagerness turns into nervous excitement, and when performance time comes around, they are totally oblivious to mannerisms and expressions they exhibit during performance. They are also not fully aware of the beauty they are producing while singing.

Having performances video-taped would give students a chance to fully understand and appreciate the gift of music they are sharing with others.

During the year, we perform three formal concerts and my students and I work hard to prepare a musical program that is not only enjoyable, but challenging at the same time. Our choral program is new, only in it's second year, and students are just beginning to "think for themselves" when it comes to performance. I feel that watching and analyzing their own performances serve several important goals. Most importantly, their self-esteem and confidence levels will increase as they hear what the audience hears: beautiful music. Seriously, my students really do a great job! In addition, they will learn to listen critically and see ways to improve their music making. Hopefully, this skill of self-analysis will be applied further in other areas of their lives.
