I teach two kindergarten classes at a Title I school. My students come from very diverse backgrounds and for many Kindergarten is their first exposure to English and a classroom setting. My students speak English, Spanish, Chinese, Chuukese, Urdu, and Marshallese. Many of my students come from limited English proficiency homes, and half of them come from very low socioeconomic backgrounds.
My students need concrete and hands-on experiences so they can experience things for themselves in order to build up both their experience and language bases.
They need to be able to interact with one another and work together to experience early success that will give them the confidence for great achievements for the remainder of their school career.
The Star Diner, role-play costumes, and accessories will be essential in helping my kindergarten students learn how to interact with one another, practice social skills, and integrate essential language skills as they play in our dramatic play center! They will interact with one another using the Star Diner, practice social skills as they engage with one another in role play and turn taking, and build their language bases as they talk and socialize with one another.
By donating to our project, you will help to improve and increase the social skills, language skills, and character education skills in my forty-four kindergarten students and give them essential skills that they will use throughout their lives.
Mr. Roger's said it best, "Play is the work of childhood." Help my students learn to work and play together and give them a successful foundation for the rest of their lives. Remember, all you really need to know you learned in kindergarten!
