This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Many of my students face struggles and challenges in their daily lives, but I see their dedication, and the joy they find in learning is truly inspiring.
We work together to create a learning community where everyone is safe and feels valued.
During their time in my class, I work to show my students the rewards hard work brings, as well as to show them that our unique differences are to be celebrated and respected.
I teach in a Title I school with the majority of students receiving free or reduced price lunch. While our families want their children to be successful, and there is great community support for the schools, I know that many students will not come to school prepared with the necessary supplies. I do my best to ensure that all students have what they need academically, physically, and emotionally during the time they are in my care.
My Project
"Play, while it cannot change the external realities of children's lives, can be a vehicle for children to explore and enjoy their differences and similarities and to create, even for a brief time, a more just world where everyone is an equal and valued participant." -Patricia G. Ramsey
Respect for others and working cooperatively are two essential parts of our classroom community.
These skills are taught throughout the year with a variety of lessons, but to truly master such high level social skills, students need the opportunity to practice these skills in an enjoyable, meaningful situation that is on their level.
Learning how to play games can have a benefit in the classroom, as well. By playing the games included in the Cooperative Board Game Set students will be strengthening their ability to work together as a team, with an emphasis on having fun with classmates, rather than on being the sole "winner." Suspend and Connect 4 (Part of the Classic Games for Beginners) promote strategic thinking. Sequence Letters promotes not only strategic thinking, but also reinforces early literacy skills.
