My students need hands-on activities such as sandpaper letters, phonetic reading blocks, animal picture matching materials, cylinder cards and pattern blocks.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are three to six year old children in Jackson, Mississippi. They are a diverse group coming from a variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our school is the only public Montessori school in our state.
My students direct their own learning throughout the day using beautiful Montessori materials.
Each child stays with me for three years. Because of this, our classroom is like a family of children who grow together. When they come into my classroom as three year olds, they begin learning to be purposeful members of our community, eventually becoming the elder members of the learning environment, guiding the younger children by modeling. On a daily basis, I witness the delight in their faces as connections and discoveries are made using Montessori materials.
My Project
Montessori materials are designed to ignite a curiosity in the child. These materials are meant to be used by the children during sensitive periods for math, language, movement, and sensorial development. The teacher observes the child and presents materials at the time the child shows interest; therefore, the child leads his/ her development in a natural way.
These materials allow the children to actively engage in meeting cognitive learning objectives while also organizing their thinking through sensory motor activities.
For example, the sandpaper letter materials not only help the child learn letters and sounds, but also stimulate the sensorial and muscle memory. Phonetic reading blocks are used to build word families. The animal picture matching materials build vocabulary as well as a system for organizing similar items in categories. The cylinder cards and pattern blocks form a basis for mathematics and logical thinking. Small numerical rods use gradation to introduce quantity and addition.
The materials in the Montessori environment are prepared in such a way to allow the child to develop a sense of order, coordination, concentration, and independence. The child has the freedom to return to these works as often as he/ she would like.
