Play Is Our Work

My students need materials for our choice time. We need pretend play capes, mold&play sand, floor puzzles, Magna-Tiles, magnetic counting maze, community vehicles and baby dolls.

My Students

Our school is located in a very diverse neighborhood in Brooklyn. My students are 5 years old. They are an enthusiastic and hard-working bunch. Many of my kindergarteners are growing up in low-income homes and do not have access to the learning materials at home needed to promote their academic growth. Regardless of the challenges they face, my students are highly motivated and love coming to school.

The spectrum of developmental levels in kindergarten is vast, and I am working hard to meet the needs of all my students.

My Project

To develop essential language skills, my students need many opportunities to interact with their peers through active learning experiences and play.

The materials I am requesting will help my students engage in pretend play. While playing with baby dolls, my students will practice being caring and kind. The capes can be used in many different ways depending on my students' "play needs." For example, they can use the capes as veils, crowns, aprons, blankets, tents, etc. While all children enjoy role playing, having materials for their pretend play gives them the opportunity to explore new and different roles.

I am also asking for clear Magna-Tiles to add to our Magna-Tile collection so more kids can enjoy collaborative building activities.

The power of play cannot be underestimated. Through play, children learn to interact with their peers and make sense of the world around them. Play is a crucial part of children's early development. Through play, children build up their self-esteem and develop problem solving skills. All those skills provide an important foundation for academic learning.
