Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my class are mostly Hispanic and come from families that do not speak English. They come from homes that often don't have computers or technology. Many live in poverty and have challenging home lives.
Students in my class are voracious readers that love to read and listen to a variety of books.
I read two or three books aloud every day. We often reread stories and practice decoding strategies that students then go practice on their own. It is vital that I have a large library filled with many books. Students often have very few books at home, so reading in the classroom becomes so much more important for them.
My Project
This project contains a variety of different math games that will help students in my class practice and learn various math skills through play. The lessons in the curriculum use worksheets and that works for some, but not all students. These games allow children to practice these skills and learn from each other, all while playing a game.
Play is the work of childhood.
This quote by Mr. Fred Rogers is what I always think of when I choose activities for learning centers. I want students to enjoy school and enjoy learning. Worksheets don't do that. Hands-on activities and games do!
