This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are in a Title I bilingual elementary school, with a rich diversity in culture and backgrounds. As the school Media Resource Specialist my classroom, the library, is truly the heart of our school.
We truly strive to provide for not just the academic but the whole child.
As soon as you walk into the Learning Commons (library) you see our school crest with the character traits we aspire to (which are also the names of our school houses): Strength, Loyalty, Impact, Courage, Excellence and overall Leadership; these surround the four central pillars of kindness, diversity, academics, and our specials classes (PE, music and art).
Our dynamic and popular Makerspace in our library where students develop all of these traits by putting the 7 habits in action. In K-2 we call it Play-kerspace and this space supports ALL of our students including our life skills population, our bilingual students, students from hard places and more. Students who need a chance to just play and learn from playing.
My Project
ALL of our K-2 students visit the Learning Commons each week to spend time in our Play-kerspace. This is younger version of Makerspace with an emphasis on play where we have structured materials, groups and their time here to reinforce the Leader in Me program and Social Emotional skills.
Research has shown that play is important for all children not only for emotional development, but cognitive, social and physical development.
It helps them to build their brains, promote creativity, reveal passions, make connections and provide a safe place to learn (and to fail).
These building style toys, like the marble runs, Lincoln Logs, and Magna-Tiles were deliberately chosen to help students build the skill of Beginning with the End in Mind. For each, students will be asked not just to build and play but to think about their end goal first and to make the most of their time in Play-kerspace working collaboratively.
