Play Based Outdoor Classroom

Help me give my students the tools, equipment and workspace table to assist their natural curiosity of the world around them. Using these tools and materials will support their development of cognitive skills and creative expression.

My Students

I am the Atelierista (art teacher) for a Reggio Inspired preschool program that supports 10 classrooms between 2 centers. The children who attend these centers live in a rural environment and from lower income households.

During these uncertain times where social distancing will be practiced in our centers, I would like to utilize an outdoor space that is available and create an outdoor classroom.

The children will have the opportunity to observe nature, investigate the life cycles of trees, plants, animals and insects as well as witness the changing seasons and how weather effects our world. An outdoor classroom is a perfect partnership with our Reggio Inspired Preschool, our STEAM room and our Atelier (Art Studio).

My Project

The tools and materials I have selected will be used by the children in an outdoor preschool classroom setting. An outdoor nature classroom will give the children an opportunity to investigate the outdoor areas around the school. Tools such as magnifiers and treasure tubes will be used so children can further collect and explore leaves, insects, rocks and other forms of nature.

These tools will help the children make discoveries, wonder, and further investigate their natural and human made environment.

They will use the materials to assist them with collectIng, sorting, arranging and categorizIng pieces of nature to further explore their world around them. The STEM exploration table will provide a space for children to engage in a variety of hands -on experimental and investigative activities as well as a place to store and organize supplies, materials and specimens.
