Play-Based Opportunities for Diverse Learners in an Outdoor Classroom
Help me give my students hands-on learning resources for our outdoor classroom! The Learn and Store Chart stand and Outdoor Ramp Exploration Kit will provide options for all diverse learners during outdoor free play or guided play-based learning!
My students are amazing! I teach kindergarten in a K-5 elementary school! In our classroom, we strive to be kind, loving, gentle, patient, and show self-control. I try hard to instill these qualities in each child! I feel very strongly that kindergarten is the foundation for social, emotional, and academic success! We are building amazing relationships in our classroom and throughout the building!
I love to create hands-on, play-based learning opportunities to practice our academic skills while allowing opportunities to interact socially and emotionally with peers.
Not only do we create unique learning opportunities inside our classroom, but we also try to take advantage of our outdoor classroom! It has three rows of seats and a wheelchair accessible stage area.
One of the amazing things about our school community is that we have very diverse intellectual, physical, and developmental needs among the students. Our building has a wonderful life skills program. The students all interact and learn so much from one another! This outdoor space is the perfect area to include a sensory, hands-on learning environment for collaboration to take place! It provides a rich learning experience for ALL students at our school!
My Project
The magnetic dry-erase board will be a wonderful addition to our outdoor classroom! With the magnetic letters, shapes, and tunnels students can play and learn! My students love to "be the teacher" and write on the whiteboard! This will allow them to carry this favorite activity to our outdoor classroom! The Ramp Exploration Kit would be a wonderful STEM activity for free play and structured play in our outdoor classroom, as well!
Not only will these resources academically benefit students and enhance our outdoor classroom, but they will also provide an alternative outdoor play option for the students with physical limitations on the playground.
Until our playground becomes more handicap accessible, these resources will offer some outdoor play options for our students in wheelchairs and walkers.
