Our school is an alternative school for children that suffer from genetic mental illness, emotional disturbances, and cognitive developmental issues, to name a few. Our students have a great capacity to love. Most suffer from these disorders due to a traumatic experience in their past that has prevented them from progressing with their classmates at a base school.
As the art teacher, my job is to help them learn to regulate their emotions in a healthy way and eventually help them get back to their base school and their old friends.
Ever wonder how sound works? Or how to program a new sound? Research new instruments being created? Inspire others with imaginative designs? Or even calculate the possibilities of pitch? Working along side our classroom teachers, music, technology, and library media specialists, we plan to build a curriculum project that incorporates the arts for a rigorous, higher level thinking educational experience.
Using plaster gauze and cardboard, students will construct a working musical instrument that incorporates STEAM activities.
My middle school students will experiment with designing, building, marketing, programming, composing, and performing through the development of a new musical instrument. The plaster gauze/cloths needed for this project are expensive and are almost impossible to afford in order to obtain the correct amount necessary for each child to build their own instrument.
