Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in East Los Angeles, all of our students come from very diverse backgrounds. Each student reflects the diversity of our neighboring community, and they come from a wide range of economic and racial backgrounds. A little less then half of our students are on the free-lunch program, many come to school dealing with issues stemming from trauma, and a good number of our students have learning differences. Our mission is heavily rooted in social-emotional learning and TK-8 student state scores are in the top ten percentile.

Families choose our school for its model based on diversity and meeting individual needs academically, offering differentiated learning for all levels of learners with culminating real-world tasks.

This middle school is designed for students to feel like they are part of a fun and safe community, teaching them the value of education, themselves, and being a part of a larger community. Data has shown students who experienced high levels of stress or trauma benefit academically from social-emotional learning through the arts and creative outlets. Students at our school are learning about who they are, how things are all interconnected, and ways to make a difference.

My Project

Students will have the tangible experience of touching dirt, planting live plants, decorating and admiring their work as well as how the world works. The discussion will be based on climate and how our atmosphere is being affected globally, linked to the care and hydration of their own little environment.

Teaching horticulture to kiddos from the city will give them a unique, fun experience with plants and dirt - providing them a window to the importance of a healthy climate.

Terrariums are a lesson for students of all ages and learning levels. Giving some of these students an opportunity that they otherwise may not have to live in a large city where plant-space is limited. At the end of it, they have a sense of accomplishment as they admire their little beauties and ownership over their natural environment as they learn the impact of climate on living organisms.
