Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come excited to learn in two languages, as part of our Spanish Immersion Program that was adopted more than twelve years ago to meet the need of the cultural and linguistic diversity in our district. Eight years ago, parents got organized and successfully implemented uniforms at our school. This has helped our students to stay focused on learning, and it has provided a positive learning environment for everyone.

I am enriched and blessed by my students' diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic background.

More than 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. All of my kindergarten students get an amazing and unique opportunity to start learning in English and Spanish from kindergarten to grade 12. Twenty-five percent of my students' first language is English, and 50% of my students' first language is Spanish, and 25% speak another language at home. Most are bilingual. They share the journey to be able to graduate from high school bicultural, bilingual, and bi-literate; it all begins in my kindergarten classroom.

My Project

Planting the seeds to social emotional learning success goal is to provide each student all the necessary tools to plant their own seeds while learning about mindfulness. Gardening is much more than learning about the world around us, but also teaches us about ourselves.

This project will be part of our current science unit about organism, it will give me the opportunity to teach my kindergartners about mindfulness and how it can be practice while gardening.

Gardening benefits the body and the mind in so many levels: it could give my students opportunities to reconnect and regulate emotions, lower stress levels, improve relationships with others, increase the ability to focus on one thing at a time and most importantly, to feel empowered by having their own gardens at home to share with their families.

There will be many opportunities for my students to learn from how to take care of their plants to sharing about how they are feelings. We will be practicing mindfulness in class and students will have the opportunities to practice it at home in a meaningful way while gardening.

The materials for this project will provide each child all the materials required to grow three plants from seeds, an experience that I hope it will help them grow emotionally during our current challenging times.
