Planting The Seeds Of Empathy

Help me give my students the opportunity to read a variety of literature from a multitude of cultures around the world. Each class set of novels will bring a deeper understanding of empathy to people around the world

My Students

Our school is changing the way students think of "traditional schooling." We challenge students to find their passions, engage in discussion, and challenge what is expected of them.

Through a collaborative effort of English and Social Studies teachers, our students who come from a variety of different backgrounds will explore Islam through a novel study as well as author study.

Our students bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our classroom, whether it be from travels around the world, learning a new culture and language moving to this country, or family heritages that trace to countries near and far. In our collaborative effort creating a Humanities program for our students, our goal is to bring all of this together to dive deeper into our literature and studies of different cultures around the world. Our school represents a diverse population bordering two unique cities and with that comes a unique school community. Our goal is to provide a common ground for all of our students through a larger cultural exploration via literature.

My Project

These books will help us continue to build the culture of reading we have created within our 7th grade Humanities classes. As we continue to build and push for the importance of reading and literature, it is imperative that we teach students HOW to read and HOW to pull information from difficult texts.

Literature Circles will allow our students to choose their own books to dive deeper into and enjoy as we look to analyze written text.

Through the literature circle unit, students will be looking at texts that both provide examples of characters showing empathy towards others as well as allowing for students to explore deeper meaning of literature through guided discussion with their peers.
