Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my classroom next year are going to be fifth graders and excited about their educational experience with Core Lit. Students in this transitional grade are faced with many challenges whether it be social, physical, or emotional. Core Lit in the classroom offers students the opportunity to learn about different perspectives and allows them the background knowledge needed to interact appropriately with their peers. The students in fifth grade at Vintage Magnet School come from a diverse background and, along with that they are able to offer their wealth of knowledge into the classroom discussions.

My Project

I have used this novel in my prior years as a fifth grade teacher and I have seen the effects of it multiply tenfold. By offering students the opportunity to interact with this story, not only will it will increase their love and fondness of reading core literature in the classroom, but it will teach them to celebrate the diversity amongst them.

Seedfolks teaches about acceptance of self and others and the importance of not judging others based on your first impression of them.

It teaches students about opening up and embracing the differences amongst us and actually allowing those differences to bring us together. Seedfolks teaches about the power of community and working together.

I will be using this novel to open up the school year in the hopes that it will build a strong sense of community within our classroom. Through learning to embrace and understand different cultures and identities, the students in my classroom will begin the year on a strong foundation of acceptance that they can build upon throughout the school year through their interactions with the students in our school. This foundation of acceptance will increase the impact they have on their peers and inspire them to be role models.
