Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Why are there no apples at the Bodega! Ok, there may be some but finding it is like a “Where’s Waldo” book page. You’ll be lucky if you find it in the vast swarm of potato chips, cookies and candy.

Students learn at a young age that the most accessible food in their neighborhood is junk food.

It’s cheap and plentiful. Overtime, as students continuously consume these foods, they can run the risk for diabetes and other food related ailments.

If students know better, they are more likely to do better! My goal for this project is to have students learn about healthy foods and gain access to these foods by growing these foods. This is a two-fold project as students get to learn the science of growing food and gain knowledge of the social injustices around food systems and decipher ways, they can help to overcome these injustices in the classroom and extend that to the larger school community.

As a compliment activity, we will explore the work of Karen Washington, and take a field trip to the New York Botanical Gardens, “Edible Garden” and visit a local community garden.
