Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students often bring me small treasures of a dry leaf or a dandelion that they found on the way to school. They are fascinated by nature, even though most of the nature they see is in pictures in books. There are few trees or plants in the part of the Bronx where my first grade students live. Their parents work long hours, and while extremely committed to helping with homework, are unable to splurge on trips to parks. I hope to build on my students' fascination with plants, and allow them to explore firsthand how plants grow and change, as well experience the feeling of being out in the woods. I want to do a project that stems from their innate curiosity, since that is the joyful part of learning that is often missing from their time in school. We live close to the New York Botanical Gardens, but none of my students have been there. I hope to bring them there for a day to participate in a workshop on the life cycle of plants, plant some seeds, and also just run around in the woods and play hide-and-go-seek. This is an activity that we will build on in our classroom after returning, by discussing, journaling, and raising our seedlings. It is also something that we will build on in more profound ways - the message that learning can come from what you are most interested in will stick with my students long past the trip.
