Planting Seeds, Growing Children

Help me give my students the tools, supplies and books to help them create and care for our school garden, including butterfly larvae and seeds for plants that feed them.

My Project

My school is a place where we all belong, we all have the right to learn, and where we all contribute towards a better school, city and world community. My 500+ students hail from states and countries across 5 continents, and bring with them an eagerness to learn and willingness to explore the natural world around them. Help me give them the tools, materials and resources they need to actively learn about, grow and tend their own school garden.

By giving students activities in an outdoor garden classroom, abstract concepts are brought to life through active, hands-on learning.

Gardening tasks, such as planning, planting, caring and harvesting physically illustrate the concept of cultivation. Plants, insects, birds and weather all become participants in the learning process. As a result, children are more engaged, more attentive and more motivated to learn. In the outdoor classroom my students step into roles naturally, becoming risk-takers, partners, leaders and problem solvers. But most importantly, I see students who typically struggle in a classroom setting come into their own and shine.

Teamwork, work ethic, perseverance, community and children are what is really growing in our school garden. Please support this project to help current and future students experience these same benefits and more. Thank you so much.
