Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Planting their own flowers will give my students the opportunity to learn some new words in English through a hands-on experience. They will pick, plant, log and care for plants keeping everything labeled and organized in folders. My students are non-native students. Many moved abruptly to the United States and were brought here leaving their immediate family behind. Our students have diverse needs. Most come with interrupted education and are significantly below grade level. In our class students improve their primary language skills and their secondary language in our room together. Many of them miss being able to have a garden and experience the outdoors. We will use this activity to learn terms in English while doing something fun! The students will pick the seeds they want to plant. They will be able to choose a plant, watch it grow, and care for it! They will use the soil, seeds, pots, and other gardening materials in this project to plant and care as they observe how the plants grow. Then they will take their plants home and share with their families.
