My Project

This fast plant growing kit will help Advanced Placement (AP) biology students understand the process of evolution by artificial selection. This will be the first activity in a project-based, cross-curricular unit in which students investigate the mechanisms which led to the evolution of modern-day corn from its ancestor teosinte.

Students will design and implement their own selective breeding experiments using these plants and learn to write a formal scientific laboratory report.

In doing so, they will increase their mastery of scientific practices and expand their literacy skills. Additionally, throughout the project, they will learn more about indigenous communities and their important contributions to modern agriculture.
