A garden grows in Brooklyn, not just any garden but one that was tended and nurtured from the onset by students in our inner city school, P.S. 279, Brooklyn, New York. Forty special education and general education students, ages 4-11, will work together to create a recycled container garden. They come with 3 classroom teachers, 1 Science teacher, (that's me), 4 paraprofessionals and an abundance of energy. Our common goal will be to create a beautiful, environmentally friendly garden to be enjoyed by the students and staff of P.S. 279 and its surrounding community. Our school garden will provide a wonderful and exciting way to make school subjects more meaningful and interesting to our students. It is a perfect place to teach practically every subject from science and math to art and poetry. The students will work cooperatively to reap the rewards of nature through their diligent work. We will begin this project with germinating seeds indoors and transplanting the seedlings in recycled containers. For this project we need basic gardening supplies, such as gardening tools, potting soil, and watering cans. Additionally, tending a garden requires students to become responsible for the growth of their plants. This will help develop a sense of accountability, pride and self-esteem as they watch their garden grow and beautify the school grounds.
