Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I often tell my students that, "Time is money!" They look at me like I have five heads until I explain. If we want to "make money," or in other words be successful, we must use our time wisely. Finding the discipline to do this is a difficult challenge to overcome for many, specifically my students.

My school is located in New York City, which many people consider a city filled with opportunity; however for my hard-working fifth-graders, this is not always the case.

In the middle of a low-income neighborhood, many of the students at my school spend a great deal of time contributing to household chores, caring for younger siblings, and simply fighting to survive. Unfortunately, despite a well-intended work ethic, homework and daily assignments are almost never in the forefront of their minds. Rather, crime, poverty, and medical concerns consume their attention.

My Project

Since my students are entering the fifth grade, it's important that they begin to foster a sense of responsibility and independence. Student planners will help them to do just that. My students will be responsible in recording their homework assignments daily and independent in their ability to complete these assignments. Additionally, it will help them to make up any work which is not completed because they will be able to easily flip back to previous dates and recognize the work that was missing. By becoming responsible and hard-working fifth graders, my students will be set up for success. They will be able to practice and reinforce the skills they learn in school at home. They will gain an awareness of responsibilities and the discipline it takes to complete such responsibilities. Ultimately, my students will become college and career ready.

All too often, adults struggle with time management.

We know what needs to be done but we have no idea how to get it done. Student planners will help prepare my fifth graders for their future as they gain the discipline, responsibility, and independence needed to use their time wisely. We must constantly remind ourselves that time is money!
