Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of my students come from from the Excelsior and Bayview-Hunters Point Districts in San Francisco. Since the 1960s, the Bayview-Hunters Point community has been cited as a significant example of marginalization. It remains "one of the most economically disadvantaged areas of San Francisco."
Root causes include a working-class populace historically segregated to the outskirts of the city, high levels of industrial pollution, the closure of industry, and loss of infrastructure.
The results have been high rates of unemployment, poverty, disease, and crime. In the 1980s, the Excelsior neighborhood became predominantly Latino with the arrival of refugees from Central American wars and immigrants from Mexico.
Our students are so resilient and bright, but sometimes they aren't able to focus in class because they experience tremendous amounts of trauma and stress. I work full-time in the Health and Wellness Center at our high school, and I am a Community Health Outreach Worker. I often see students struggle with stress, trauma, illness, and depression due to things happening in their homes and in their communities. I am committed to providing a safe, clean, and comfortable space for all students.
My Project
Planners are a vital to a students success in order to stay on top of assignments and activities. Many of the homeless youth I encounter while at work, are in dire need of a place to write down appointments, reminders, and notes. My students also need access to personal hygiene products to use at school and at home. Tampons and wipes help homeless students feel clean, comfortable, and clean easy to learn. Creating a welcome back kit for our most at risk youth will help set the tone for the academic year ahead. I will be monitoring several young ladies attendance and grades who ensure they are on track to graduate on time dispite their current living situations.
Having an organized backpack and planner allows students to feel empowered and take control of their education.
Please help us comeplete this project so our students can start the year off right.
