Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each morning my students start the day by reciting our school values, which drive student and teacher motivation. One states,"We believe that each of us can learn and that in school we grow to become all that we can be". What does this look like in the classroom? Students are encouraged to have a growth mindset by creating goals for themselves and later reflecting on their progress towards them. Also visible is the accountability they have not only for themselves but for their peers.

Often seen are students encouraging others to complete work accurately, come to school organized and prepared, and a no excuses approach to their academic success.

My 5th graders will be moving on to middle school within a few weeks. I feel this is an important opportunity for them to reflect on their personal progress and pass on that they value and understand hard work to the upcoming fifth grade class. Believing that what they do is not just for themselves, but to help others, is a valuable, lifelong experience.

My Project

The current school year is coming to a close and my fifth graders and I engaged in a conversation where we reflected on different times throughout the school year where they felt engaged and excited about the learning opportunities they had. I asked them to reflect on the types of learning resources that would benefit the incoming fifth graders in their studies.

Students shared they felt excited to complete math activities in their interactive notebooks, where they are cutting, gluing, and coloring all while being encouraged to think critically in a creative way.

Interactive notebooks include foldables with pockets and interactive flaps which allow students to organize information in a colorful, creative way. They learn to highlight important information and put great effort into personalizing them while creating a professional looking resource. Color pencils, markers, scissors, and glue sticks will help students as they work on their interactive notebooks.

Having the chance to use dry erase boards proved to be fun, but challenging, when resources are low to buy new markers. The use of individual dry erase boards is a quick way for the teacher to assess students as we work through challenging math concepts. Using dry erase boards encourages students to attempt to solve a problem during Math time and any errors can be simply wiped away. This feedback proved to be helpful as I put together a wish list for my future students.
