Plankton Races

My students need 500 pipe cleaners, play dough, and 3 various sized plastic bead sets.

I teach earth science in sixth grade, which includes oceanography, space, meteorology, the study of volcanoes and earthquakes. I have a mixture of students from all socioeconomic types. I want to ensure that these students will have a love for science that will last their lifetime. I want them to see the wonder of science and how it is connected to everything they see, do and even think! I try to make sure my students are able grasp scientific concepts by experimenting and doing instead of reading about it.

We study oceanography in the fall. We investigate all different life forms, including plankton. I want to insure that these student remember plankton and how important it is to our world. We have plankton races as a culminating activity to our oceanography unit.I need supplies for students to construct their plankton, in order for it to stay in the water the longest. We time the plankton as it travels down a clear tube of water.

Students will work in partnered groups to build their plankton. We need pipe cleaners, beads, and play dough to build our plankton. The objective is to build plankton that will be suspended in the water for a long time, before it falls to the bottom. The longest time wins.

This activity, with your help, will motivate my students to learn more about plankton, to understand that the form and shape of plankton is important in how it stays certain water levels and to let them work in a cooperative environment to achieve their goal.
