Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom is a happy one! With 85% of our population at a low socio-economic level challenges arise. Families are loyal to our small school and community-several generations have grown up and stayed in the area. The majority of my students have limited resources and academic support at home, but parents willingly contribute where possible. My students are eager to learn and do best when I meet them where they are with materials that interest and engage them.
My students need materials to help them learn about, identify, and classify rocks.
My students love rocks and they are everywhere! The interest level is high, but I need supplies to develop their scientific understanding, so it can match their fascination.
My Project
By providing my students with books, a classified rock collection, and a rock tumbler, I will be able to teach them facts about something they are already fascinated with. Our school is actually built on and surrounded by a dried river bed, therefore it's covered with rocks!
Each rock they collect is a treasure.
I hope by teaching them the facts about how rocks are formed it will increase their interest and encourage their curiosity on a deeper level.
The books will be read with partners and provide nonfiction information. The rock tumbler will create vivid stones from seemingly ordinary rocks. The collection will allow them to compare and evaluate rocks they find themselves. Kids naturally love rocks! Let's help them appreciate the processes and time involved in their formation.
